Since 2019, and thanks to the support from the European Commission, OpenNebula Systems has been leading the edge computing innovation in Europe, investing heavily in research and open source development, and playing a key role in strategic EU initiatives such as the IPCEI-CIS and the “European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud”.

We are currently looking for a Cloud-Edge Systems Developer (Contractor) to come and join us in Europe as part of our new team developing the next generation management platform for the Cloud-Edge Computing Continuum.

Objective

Cloud Systems Developers are responsible for coding the core features for management, orchestration and virtualization. Developers focus on ensuring that cloud management products align with project and business goals, comply with best practices, and meet performance requirements.

You’ll work in an agile environment to design, develop, test, maintain and validate with use cases a next generation management platform for the Cloud-Edge Computing Continuum. You will also participate in the upstream community, on challenging projects developing innovative edge/cloud systems. Applicants should be passionate about the future of the software defined datacenter, distributed systems, and open source.

Services

  • Design, develop and maintain OpenNebula components, especially orchestration and management
  • Designing component APIs, interfaces and data formats.
  • Evaluating the performance of cloud systems to identify bottlenecks and bugs
  • Test-driven development of large solutions integrating and extending open source products, and using Git based workflows to develop new features in the project repositories
  • Writing and maintaining software documentation
  • Working with user use cases to test, debug, and troubleshoot software, assuring quality and functionality
  • Working with other companies in the cloud-edge ecosystem within international projects and open-source communities. Availability to occasional travel and participation in international events and meetings
  • Working with the integration and deployment teams in support and issue troubleshooting and triage, the use cases and solutions team in discovery and demo sessions, and the community team in contributions to the open-source community

From 17 June 2024 to 30 June 2026 (24’5 months)

Location

Remote (occasionally F2F coordination meetings)

Budget

Maximum hourly rate is 40 euros

Maximum work hours per year is 1.800

The maximum estimated cost is 6.000 euros per month, and a total of 147.000 euros

Technical Specifications

Contractors must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • +5 years of hands-on experience in software development (Ruby/C/C++) and virtualization (KVM)

Evaluation Criteria

Eligible contractors will be prioritized according to the following criteria:

  • Price: Cost per hour
  • Additional Education: Master or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • Additional Experience: Number of years of experience in research and development projects in the field of cloud and edge computing
  • Technical Skills: Experience in software development for cloud management and orchestration, and virtualization

Administrative Specifications

Before the signature of the contract, the successful selected contractor will be requested to provide the following certificates:

  • Positive certificate, issued by the local Social Security Authority, to the effect that the contractor is up-to-date in compliance with its Social Security obligations; or similar document according to the the law of the country in which the contractor is established
  • Positive certificate, issued by the local Tax Authority, to the effect that the contractor is up-to-date in compliance with its tax obligations; or similar document according to the the law of the country in which the contractor is established

The successful selected contractor will be given a two weeks period after the notification of the award to provide the above-mentioned documents.
