FairVote, headquartered in Silver Spring, MD, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is associated with FairVote Action, a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. Our focus is electoral reform that gives voters a greater choice, a stronger voice, and a more representative democracy. Since 1992, FairVote has been the national leader in developing and distributing the educational tools and analysis necessary to increase public appreciation of the value of ranked-choice voting (RCV).

Position Summary 

FairVote is seeking an experienced graphic designer to develop internal and external materials supporting FairVote’s election reform goals, including designing graphics; creating, editing, and formatting documents and templates; managing and advising on creative projects; and managing branding guidelines across the organization. We are also seeking a candidate with experience developing and producing video content, largely for social media and the web. 

The ideal candidate for this position has an interest in FairVote’s work on ranked-choice voting, and can create content for a variety of audiences. This position reports to the Director of Communications. 

The designer will collaborate with FairVote staff across all departments and various consultants/vendors as needed to advance FairVote and its issue agenda. This position is full-time with benefits and is a member of FairVote’s union.

Scope of work: 

Content Creation (60%)

  • Format handouts, fact sheets, case studies, infographics, graphics for websites, and other supporter-facing content 
  • Edit/format reports alongside FairVote’s research department as requested
  • Design visual social media content, including infographics and graphics
  • Create and edit video content including webinars, social media reels, and explainer videos
  • Develop additional graphics, Google Slides/PowerPoint presentations, and other on-brand visual materials as requested
  • Develop content for both FairVote/FairVote Action, as well as content for coalition partners, stakeholders, and key messengers (reflecting their brands, if applicable)
  • Develop new branding as needed for new campaigns

Project Management (25%)

  • Work closely & effectively with FairVote staff across departments, as well as partner organizations as requested
  • Manage production process & schedule for some long-form content deliverables, such as extensive reports, studies, and presentations. 
  • Manage production of content-specific projects across multiple departments to:
    • Ensure all outbound content reflects FairVote/FairVote Action’s brand 
    • Maintain all materials created by FairVote to ensure brand consistency and messaging best practices.

Support the Communications Department (15%) 

  • Populate an internal editorial calendar, including key products and their scheduled publish date
  • Provide guidance to FairVote staff on design and best practices, and use qualitative and quantitative feedback to improve content
  • Collaborate with and occasionally manage vendors (graphic designers, web design firms) on an as-needed basis 
  • Draft proposals for vendors or new design strategies as needed, in collaboration with the Communications Department and other FairVote staff

Requirements: 

Experience: 

  • Advanced experience and portfolio of work emphasizing graphic design
  • 3-4 years of expertise in developing creative content for a variety of audiences
  • Interest in policy issues, especially election reform issues
  • 2-3 years of experience project managing colleagues to develop public-facing materials

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in Adobe Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign)
  • Experience in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro
  • Experience in Canva
  • Knowledge of Google Drive and Google Workspace software
  • Proven success in managing multiple projects with various deadlines and points of contact
  • Experience creating visual assets for social media accounts
  • Ability to understand the perspective and needs of different audiences and develop persuasive public-facing content on FairVote’s priority issues
  • Commitment to work across the political spectrum for FairVote reforms
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly in the creation and dissemination of public-facing materials

LOCATION

FairVote is based in Silver Spring, MD. This position may be performed remotely, with the expectation to attend 2-4 staff meetings or events per year, mostly at or near FairVote’s Silver Spring, MD office.
