The Job

As the On To The Future(OTF) Program Coordinator, you will be a crucial asset in providing comprehensive administrative support directly to the  Director of Scientific Integrity with all aspects of GSA’s On To the Future program, including advertising, communications, application, and database management, administering Short Courses, Field Trips, mentoring programs, and other associated activities. This opportunity is a visible role that demands customer service skills, attention to detail, and high professionalism.

This position includes defining and implementing the functions necessary to initiate, operate, and complete a project within an allotted time frame. You may be involved in working with GSA committees (Diversity Committee), GSA sections and Divisions, GSA Associated Societies, individual members, individual non-member geoscientists, students, and early career professionals, staff from other interrelated societies, internal and/or external funding sources, government agencies and/or private industries, academic institutions, and/or other staff members.

This opportunity is a grant-funded, five-year position that may be extended after five years. Additionally, work may be conducted remotely or hybrid at our Washington D.C. or Boulder, CO HQ.

Key Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with the Director of Scientific Integrity and the NSF UPSTART project team.
  • Communicate with OTF participants, alumni, and applicants on various requests for information regarding program-specific information and other inquiries.
  • Advertises OTF in appropriate publications and organizations, including GSA publications, the website, social media, and/or external publications.
  • Assists with planning OTF and UPSTART activities in preparation for the annual meeting.
  • Attends GSA Connects, the Society’s annual meeting; oversees OTF programs on-site.
  • Works with the Director and UPSTART team to recruit, schedule, and communicate with mentors.
  • Works closely with GSA’s Education, Communications, and Outreach (ECO) and Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) Departments to write and facilitate OTF and UPSTART articles for GSA Today, help organize the monthly online student publication GeoScene, and provide content for GSA social media.  
  • Maintains database of OTF and UPSTART participants and alumni; assists in tracking career progress of participants.  
  • Beginning in Year 4, supervision of multiple student interns per year
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong presentation and professional writing skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google products. 
  • Familiarity with databases and data analysis is helpful.
  • Tactful, discreet, exceptional personal and business ethics. 
  • Ability to multi-task, balance several projects, organize and set own work priorities with proven ability to follow through on details and work in progress.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and to establish, track, and meet deadlines.
  • Professional behavior and appearance are required.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is strongly preferred. 
  • Degree or equivalent experience in science or related field preferred.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements

  • Extensive computer work – six or more hours per day, multiple projects, and multiple deadlines that create a demanding work environment are standard.
  • Move and lift luggage, equipment, and boxes that could weigh more than 20 pounds.
  • Stand and/or walk for long periods while on-site at meetings.
  • Travel required to Connects Meetings for up to 8 days once each year; travel to assigned Section Meeting(s) each year for up to 5 days per meeting, and other travel as necessary or assigned.  This position may include evening and weekend work. 

An ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of administrative experience.

The opportunity is a full-time, non-exempt position with the flexibility to be conducted remotely or as a Hybrid work schedule in our Washington, D.C., or Boulder, Colorado offices. Full-time, grant-funded for five years. The compensation range is $27.50 – $28.85 per hour based on experience, which is up to $60,000 when annualized. GSA provides excellent benefits, including medical, dental, and PTO, which include paid holidays, life insurance, 403(b) retirement, and opportunities for professional development. Additional recognized time off includes Juneteenth and Indigenous Peoples Day in 2024.
