About the Impact at Scale Labs

GSF launched the Impact at Scale Labs in 2021. By 2024, we will have supported 12 organisations aiming to reach an additional 100,000 children with their solutions for COVID19 learning recovery, early childhood education and development, and foundational literacy and numeracy. Based on our learnings, GSF developed the Impact at Scale Toolkit, a library of in-depth scale tools and case studies organisations use to navigate their scale journeys. We have partnered with HundrED, Schools2030 and the Jacobs Foundation to create a user friendly mechanism to support the translation and uptake of scaling research for the education community. Our funding partners are Jacobs, UBS, Hilton, Vitol, Bill and Melinda Gates and AKO Foundations.

Our first Impact at Scale Labs programme worked with Dignitas, Gyan Shala and Sabre Education to test new scale pathways. Each organisation worked on specific areas to sustainably scale their interventions.

  • Sabre strengthened the feasibility of their model by nurturing their partnership with government who are now supporting their operational delivery of their APS model in 29 schools in Ghana;
  • Gyan Shala improved the viability of their model by improving their cost per programme through rigorous financial modelling, making their model more appropriate for scale in the APS sector and;
  • Dignitas determined the desirability of their model by ensuring their model is effectively solving the right problem through rigorous A/B testing.

In 2024, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the third Impact at Scale Labs, dedicated to accelerating Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) innovations in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Collaborating with the Bill and Melinda Gates and the AKO Foundations, we are set to deliver our largest Labs programme to date. We will be supporting five FLN organisations globally and providing them with our largest grant of $200,000 alongside scaling support.

The Global FLN Impact at Scale Labs seeks to transform education systems by working with promising innovators in those systems. The Labs aims to do this by carefully selecting locally led organisations which work to improve foundational literacy and numeracy and support them with:

  • Grant Funding: Selected organisations will receive up to $200,000;
  • Tailored coaching and technical support: grantees will receive 18 months of tailor-made support to test new pathways to scale and build a foundation for sustainability;
  • Evidence-building activities: grantees will be supported to build appropriate mechanisms to collect data and evidence to support their decision-making;
  • Access to ecosystem partners: grantees will be given the opportunity to engage with the global GSF member base and wider network to build partnerships for scale;
  • Wide platform of peers: grantees will be given a platform to share evidence and encourage replication of impactful solutions.
