The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Manager to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating projects across several product development teams. Your primary focus will be on developing efficient software delivery processes, executing effective strategies, and ensuring the timely completion of projects.

As an Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in managing the workloads for product engineering teams, setting up and maintaining the software delivery process, liaising with product managers and helping them manage the product backlogs for individual teams. Your role will be to set up and maintain an efficient and repeatable delivery process that multiple engineering teams and product managers can adopt and use.

Your Responsibilities

Manage engineering team workflows

Engineering managers oversee the operations of their teams. They manage workloads, facilitate regular ceremonies, monitor performance, facilitate growth and handle dependencies within and between teams to ensure efficient software delivery.

Build and maintain agile development process

Engineering manager defines the development process, ensures the backlogs are maintained and are in good order, facilitates the day-to-day activities, regular meetings and ceremonies.

Coordinating with tech teams, product team and other business functions

An engineering manager coordinates and resolves dependencies between teams, engages and ensures the product managers and the engineering teams are well aligned and their goals are clear, helps define development priorities, and serves as a touchpoint between the tech teams and other parts of the business.

Recruiting engineers

Engineering managers participate in the recruitment process, select candidates that align with the team’s needs and company’s values. They evaluate prospective candidates’ technical skills, problem-solving abilities and teamwork aptitude.

Conducting performance reviews and giving feedback

Engineering managers conduct performance reviews for their teams to ensure productivity and help members develop their careers. These reviews analyse individual contributions and achievements, discuss areas for improvement and set new goals to foster continuous professional development.

Skills & Experience

Software development

An engineering manager understands software engineering principles and understands the challenges software engineers face. A successful candidate was a hands-on developer in their recent past, they would have a senior engineering background and knowledge of the trade and the industry. While this is not a hands-on role per se, a detailed understanding of the SDLC and its intrinsic challenges is essential.

Team management

A successful candidate would have several years of experience in managing a software development team, as a hands-on team leader, a hands-off engineering manager, or somewhere inbetween. This is a Senior Engineering Manager role and prior experience is essential.

Delivery management

A successful candidate can demonstrate an understanding and practical skills of setting up and managing delivery of a software development project, based on the specification and input provided by the product owners.

Agile methodologies

A successful candidate would have a detailed understanding and experience in operating an agile delivery team, using Scrum, Kanban or other blends of Agile methodology. It is essential for them to understand the iterative nature of software development, and be able to set up and maintain rapid iteration cycles by multiple teams.

Performance management

A successful candidate would have experience in managing multiple direct reports, setting personal development goals, collecting and delivering detailed performance feedback, setting up and executing performance improvement plans.

Domain expertise

Having some domain expertise in fintech would certainly be helpful. While not essential for the role, it will help better understand the specific challenges a large fintech like Railsr is facing and how to address them.
